MUA
It is an amazing time in healthcare, when an MD - Physical Medicine Specialist, an MD - Anesthesiologist and a DC - Chiropractic Physician can work hand in hand to help chronic pain patients to get better.
MUA or Manipulation Under Anasthesia is a non-invasive surgical procedure for patients who have failed to respond to other treatments such as physical therapy, epidural or trigger point injections, decompression therapy, spine or extremity surgery. It is also a treatment for chropractic patients who have shown temporary improvement of symptoms without long term stabilization of their condition.
MUA can be a valuable procedure for chronic neck, back, muscle and joint problems which were caused by prior accidents and injuries that have not responded to conventional treatment.
Candidates for MUA include but are not limited to chronic pain patients associated with Fibromyalgia, Chronic Disk Bulges or Herniations without fragmentation (up to a specific level of severity), failed back surgeries, facet syndrome, sacroileitis, chronic myofascitis, sciatica and fibro-adhesions (often in extremity joints).
Symptoms such as chronic numbness, tingling, tightness, stiffness, spasm, local and radiating pain are commonly described by patients who are determined to be candidates for the procedure.
Dr Kent Klonel has been certified and proctored in this procedure and has privileges with the Altamonte Outpatient Surgery Center, LLC, near the Altamonte Mall. Patients are brought to this facility for a trial of two-three consecutive days: (Mond./Tues/ Wed.- PM's or Fri., Sat & Sund.- AM's) after clearance for the procedure. A light sedative, Propafol is administered by IV to achieve total relaxation. The procedure is then initiated. The patient can expect from beginning to end, each day, to take about two hours.
Three distinct and separate groups of procedures make up MUA: 1) Slow long axis stretching of various muscle groups is performed with transverse frictional massage to reduce chronic scar tissue. 2) Joint mobilization is provided to various extremity joints to improve range of motion and reduce chronic fibrotic tissue in the capsules of the joints. 3) Spinal manipulation is provided to the joints of the spine with abnormal biomechanics, to restore function, range of motion and to reduce infiltration of scar tissue. This can occur at the joint level or scar tissue can wrap around the nerve causing impingement or irritation.
This procedure has shown very high patient satisfaction and improvement. After the procedure, for the first two weeks, patients focus on stretching and flexibility at home and palliative therapies in the office. After that, they are moved into a more active treatment protocol of exercise rehabilitaiton for a 4-6-8 weeks, spinal manipulation is provided concurrently to maintain the biomechanics and then following rehab, the patient is seen PRN as appropriate for their specific residual conditions.
